Carl Edwards & Rick Hendrick Join The Haitian Relief Efforts
January 16, 2010
Some of NASCAR’s biggest names are stepping up to the plate in support of the Haitian relief efforts. Rick Hendrick owner of Hendrick Motorsports, has loaned two of the team’s planes to the relief efforts in Haiti. The improvised island nation was hit with a devastating earthquake this week and the damage has been described as catastrophic. Some estimates put the number of fatalities near 100,000 with just as many homeless.
Team spokesperson Jesse Essex said Friday night that Hendrick loaned two 45-passenger Saab 2000 aircraft, which normally carry crew members during the season and two flight crews with additional support personnel to Missionary Flights International. The first flight is scheduled to leave Fort Pierce, Florida Saturday. The planes will transport both people and supplies directly into Haiti.
Meanwhile, Roush Fenway Racing superstar Carl Edwards has taken to social networking to keep his fans informed and encourage them about ways they can help support the relief efforts.
Carl posted the following on his facebook page: “wanna help in haiti? my friend mike mauldin works with wyclef jean and has relayed the horror in haiti to me. wyclefs charity is an honest, simple way to help. if you can, txt “yele” to 501501 to donate $5 (billed to your phone). mike vouches that this is a way to help that ensures your $ go to the people who need it. thx guys!“
